In a small Pacific Northwest town nestled in the woods, legend has it that there is a sacred forest demon called The Red Coat, believers having sacrificed live animals to it in the demon providing eternal life to the chosen, with the blood of the sacrificed providing nourishment for its power. This legend provides the backdrop for the existence of the Chinese immigrant Loi family, mother Yan, teenage son Edward, and adolescent daughter Emily, they who farm a small plot of land outside of town. They have been harassed by one of the most powerful men in town, Joe Reynolds, and his associates, the Lois who believe is responsible for the disappearance of their family patriarch. The reasons for the harassment are several, but the core of it is that Reynolds is simply a violent racist. This mentality has been handed down the Reynolds family from at least his elderly, frail mother, and while he fosters it within the next generation within his circle, the one person who does not espouse it is his daughter, Rachel, Edward's classmate. In Yan and Edward defending their property against who they believe is another of Reynold's associates, they instead find a man they don't know solely injured and hiding out, he who, upon his recuperation, ends up helping them in more ways than one. By the man's request to him, Edward begins to believe that he truly is The Red Coat. In reality, he has a history with Reynolds similar to theirs, his last encounter with Reynolds ten years ago which fundamentally changed him and which affects what he does and plans to do with respect to Reynolds and the Lois.
